Tomson Consulting Limited was approached in order to assess the extent of wildlife and biodiversity on this arable farm, and to identify opportunities for enhancement and how this could be done. This land covers over 1500 acres which is now undergoing periodic assessment so as to monitor and report on changes and improvements as the enhancements take effect. Baseline surveys were completed to assess the extent of breeding birds, wildflowers, insects and mammals. Areas for potential additional wildlife habitat creation were identified.
Chris assessed opportunities for ecological enhancement on this large arable site which is also home to an anaerobic digester. A pro-active approach was taken recognising that modern, efficient farming is vitally important but can also allow room for wildlife, and enhancement of habitats with careful thought and design.
With Chris Tomson’s unique knowledge of regenerative agriculture, biodiversity enhancement and habitat creation this ongoing project continues to transform the land. Chris continues to support his client to productively farm with nature and report on continuing improvements with confidence. We aim to work with modern, profitable farming creating farming ecosystems to support and enhance biodiversity.
Chris revisits this farm regularly, monitoring improvements and planning activities including the sowing winter bird food crops and nectar mixes and creation of new habitats such as ponds and enhanced field margins.
The relevance of this project was underlined by the growing demand in local food supply following Brexit and Covid-19. Humans need productive arable lands in order to feed a growing population, so solutions such as those employed by Chris’s client with his support are vital to ensuring regeneration of wildlife in tandem with the need to produce the food we eat and maintain our rural economies.
