Case Study: A micro-feasibility study of heat recovery from mine water

The Brief

Aims & Objectives 

The brief set out by the client required DEL to: 

  • Quantify heat available from local mine water; 
  • Identify ways this could be used within farming (e.g. horticulture, aquaculture); 
  • Determine the size of development that could be heated with available waste heat; 
  • Establish the technical and economic feasibility of utilising waste heat at two potential sites identified by the client. 

Key Actions Taken 

DEL liaised with the Coal Authority to ascertain in the first instance whether utilising the waste heat was a viable option. Subsequently, discussions focused on who would be responsible for providing infrastructure, as well as what operational considerations would need to be addressed. 

Based on outline figures, DEL calculated heat availability and the size of greenhouse that could be heated. Different farming options, including horticulture, aquaculture and fungiculture, were then appraised. Finally, the social benefit of such a project was considered.

Opportunites

DEL carried out a micro-feasibility study for Durham County Council to quantify the heat available from local mine water and outline how this could be used in a farming context. 

  • 1.3MW of low-carbon waste heat available from mine water, which could potentially be used by a co-located horticulture development 
  • Enough heat to support approx. 1.3Ha of greenhouse 
  • Competitive pricing of heat could make this financially attractive 
  • Potential to focus on maximising the social benefit to the local area 

Outcomes

An estimated 1.3MW of heat is available from the Horden mine water flow, which could be used to heat approximately 1.3Ha of greenhouse. Two potential sites were identified in the area, although one was considered economically unviable due to its distance from the heat source. 

To develop the concept further, engagement with stakeholders will be required.
